' David' Donatello Italian ( 1386-1466 ) Bronze circa 1425-1430
Donatello (1386-1466) was the greatest Florentine sculptor before Michelangelo and certainly the most influential artist of 15th century Italy.
His output was prodigious but he is perhaps best known for his bronze 'David' who he portrays as a preadolescent boy clothed only in boots and a pointed hat .
Both Donatello and Michelangelo portrayed the Biblical figure of David quite differently . Michelangelo's massive 13 foot (434 centimeters) marble sculpture was completed nearly a century after Donatello's much smaller (185 centimeters) bronze statue. However , although quite different , both are marvelous works of art. Although the sheer size of Michelangelo's statue makes his David more imposing than that of Donatello's , the latter nevertheless retains an innocent and childlike quality
