'Cupid Chastised ' Bartolomeo Manfredi Italian ( 1582-1622 ) Oil on canvas circa 1613
Bartolomeo Manfredi portrays Venus not as the beautiful goddess of love , but like an ordinary Italian woman caught in flagrente delicado with a man other than her husband . She half-kneels , one breast bared to the viewer , but in shadow pleading for her lover's skin and life while her angry husband Mars, clothed in red , flagellates the prostrate cupid .
Bartolomeo Manfredi , born in Mantua and active mainly in Rome , where he was one of the most important of Caravaggio's followers . He specialised in low-life scenes of taverns, soldiers in guardrooms , cardplaying etc: and it was he, rather than Caravaggio himself who was responsible for popularising this kind of work.
