'Judith with the Head of Holofernes ' Jan Sanders van Hemessen (Netherlandish 1519-1556 ) Oil on panel circa 1540
Jan Sanders was born in Hemessen , but settled in Antwerp in 1524 after studying in Italy . After Masseys's death in 1530 , his career heightened but eventually he was overshadowed when Bruegel arrived on the scene in the 1550's . Hemessen specialised in scenes of human character flaws such as vanity and greed .His pictures are also normally religious and his style helped found the Flemish tradition of genre painting. Hermessen was also a gifted portrait painter , which influenced his daughter , Catharina van Hemessen to become a portraitist as well.
