'Portrait of a Carthusian ' Petrus Christus ( Netherlandish 1410- 1475 ) Oil on wood circa 1446
Petrus Christus was born in the Flemish town of Baerle . His early training probably took place in the workshop of Jan van Eyck in Bruges, (Christus is his only known follower ) He is first mentioned in 1444 , when he became a free master in Bruges , and was granted citizenship in the town. With the possible exception of a visit to Milan in 1457 , he remained active in Bruge until his death in 1475.
This small , exquisitely painted portrait represents an anonymous lay brother of the Carthusian order . It is one of the few extant independent portraits by a Netherlandish painter to explore the possibilities of an interior setting .
